My six-month-old is exclusively nursing. She's ba"h quite big and chubby. She does not sit yet. She does seem to show interest in food, although she seems generally satisfied with nursing. The problem is, I might be undergoing surgery in the near future, and I assume I won't be able to nurse for a few days. Since she is only used to nursing, I need to teach her to take an alternative when I won't be available. Should I start pumping (I never pumped before)? Give her formula in a bottle? Start her on solids since she seems interested anyway? WWYD?

Pump and try to get her used to a bottle. you can try formula, but she may or may not like it at 6 months. Solids are really not going to be enough to offset the need for milk at this age, so I would introduce it but not rely on it.
I had surgery when my son was 5 months old, I was able to nurse with only slight discomfort 24 hours later. Most of the pain medication they give is fine, I came home on motrin, Pump as often as you can for the next few weeks leading up to tthe surgery, supplement with formula and solids as needed. Visit kellymom.com and Dr Jack newmans site, for info on medications and nursing.
