If flying into Canada you need a passport.
If driving, younger children (don't remember the age) can use birth certificates, an adult needs a passport, an expired passport can be used.

You need a passport but I am pretty sure you can use a passport card and don't need a passport book. Not sure why one would get the card over the book, maybe it's cheaper or easier? But that's what I recall reading.

That's right. ID is enough to get into Canada but I assume you want to come back to the US. For that you will need a passport.
