I think the reaction is the same for both- at least or me- it is boring, but important to show support.

About cool venue ideas- I did look into a bunch, the problem is they are expensive and we have a limited budget that is not very big- plus the idea of the whole thing is to make some money as it is the shul's biggest fundraiser.

I think shul dinners are more somber by nature

I went to a shul dinner with a Jewish comedian. The rabbi met with him first to make sure that he would do a clean set.

Start a thread "most fun you had at a school or organization dinner" and find out if that's so ...

I would love to go a shul dinner that featured a comedian!

The shul I went to growing up had a number of comedy nights
http://www.anshe.org/comedy.htm

When I was about 10, I don't remember why, but my father stayed home and I got the extra ticket. That was my first experience laughing so hard I was in tears. One of the comedians did a spot-on halachic argument between Bugs Bunny and Yosemite Sam about whose ox gored the other's...

I remember some fundraising dinner in Chicago was at a glass-blowing studio. I didn't go, but I hear the live demos (plus gift to take home) were cool.

Best one was when they didn't do an actual sit down dinner. Instead, it was wine or cocktails and desserts. After cocktail hour we went into another room and there was a comedian.

It was nice because we got to mingle a lot and were not stuck sitting at a big round table for hours on end listening to people drone on and on

Silent auction was during the cocktail hour.

my shul just had a dinner this past saturday night. The theme was "say a little and do a lot". It was set up more of a cocktail reception with some tables but more walking around and they had mimes walk around and do stuff with guests/put on small shows for them. I was under the impression that the mimes were going to be doing a show during the sit down speach part but it didnt happen, not sure why. myabe they ran out of time?

I have an equally negative reaction to all types of dinners - school, shul, organizations, political, etc!

I prefer to just write a check and skip the event. Some organizations have done this - invited people to the "non-event" where you just send a check. It's cute - the denominations are "$60 - the money you won't have to pay a babysitter" or "$180 - the money you won't spend on a dress and parking" or something like that.

We only go when we feel like we have to. We often buy one ticket, donate the cost of a second ticket, and then one of us stays home with the kids.
