You have to wait until plag hamincha, you can look on myzmanim for the time in your city. Ideally you should light as soon after plag as possible but if you need more time you just need to make sure to light before your husband comes home.

My husband says I'm supposed to light by the time they get to kabbalas shabbos in Shul which by us is about 25 minutes after mincha starts.
I know some people don't light until the official lighting time, meaning it's really the men doing the early shabbos.
I would say to ask your Rav how you should hold.

From what I understand some say you should light when the men are mekabel shabos in shul, which is the end of kabalas shabos (the last stanza of lech dodi). R Moshe Feinstein said you dont have to light then , but it should be before your husband comes home. But whatever you do, make sure its after plag hamincha.
