quickie course, and made a bundle? OR are they all baloney?
What is the best way to learn about investments other than conventional schools?

Read. Read. Read. And then read some more.
Seriously... in any subject, you have to start from the beginning. Pick up any good basic personal finance book and there will be some chapters on basic investing. Get that under your belt before going off for courses on complicated things like shorting stocks, or options or the like.
I personally recommend any book by David Bach, especially The Automatic Millionaire and Smart Couples Finish Rich.
