Hi
I was making 3900$ a month at my job this past year, I was offered a raise to 4200$ for the coming year, I am working in the same place for 4 years now. I went to another place for an interview and was offered 4200$ without even negotiating at all. I want to stay where I was until now but I want to negotiate for more money, does it sound reasonable to ask for 4800$?

What do you do? Aside from money you need to look at work culture. Better work environment, better benefits.

That’s about a 23.5% raise. Depends the field but if the other company was willing to pay that you’re probably being underpaid.

You say you've worked there 4 years- is this the first raise you've been offered during that time?

If so I say you can ask for it, that's a long time to go with no raise. If not, that's over a 20% raise which is a lot to ask for, unless you have another offer for that amount and are letting them offer to match it.

Standard raises are 5%. Seems you got WAY more than that. You can be honest and say you have a job offer and would like them to increase offering but it is well known that switching jobs are often the only way to increase income.

They offered you a raise of $300 and you want to ask for a raise of $900, that’s three times the amount. That seems a bit much to me. To me it sounds reasonable to tell them you got another offer and ask for around $4,400. Usually competing offers (in your case, $300 more) are matched, not tripled.

Ok thank you, I'm going to ask for 4500$ and hopefully she'll compromise to 4400$
