I feel like there is a discrepancy between how much designers feel they are worth and how much employees want to pay.
I am a designer with 10 years experience and I have a hard time finding any employer who would pay more than $40-50/hr
Does this seem like a fair salary?
Is freelance the only way to move up? Its not my thing.

Freelance is the way to go. Agencies will always keep that cap on copywriters and designers. Better to freelance for agencies. I charge 150/hr for freelance agency copywriting work.

In house designers are paid higher rates than in an agency. Definitely would advise you go on salary at any mid size business that needs an in house designer where you can make 75k+
