Assuming you have more going on than just one or two w2s...

We’re married filing jointly, two w2s and some 1099s from savings accounts, nothing complicated. He charges us $275
I priced someone else and he charges $375… so for now I’m staying out even though I’m not thrilled with certain things.

my guy used to charge $50-75 and has been going up.
last year I for sure paid over $200. each additional form he charges more.
but what can I do? I used to do it on my own but it got more complicated and I realized he knew the ins and outs of what I can claim as business expenses much better than I do (for self employment/tutoring) and saved me a lot of $$.
good luck!

Ours charges us hourly based on how long it takes to put it together.

Does anyone else’s charge by the hour or does everyone else have a fixed rate?

If you can't do it online yourself, maybe try to find a free filing program by accounting students. My dh did it several years while in school.

Truth is you don't need a cpa for a basic return, so the fees people pay are appropriate for the profession but you don't actually need that. It's like seeing a doctor to place a bandaid on a paper cut. Of course you'll overpay.

I do it myself and we are self employed. The online programs make it very easy. I’ve used hr block, turbo tax, tax act. I like hr block the best for self employed. But they’re all good

That’s a great analogy. I don’t know why accountants are so popular.

Do it urself on TurboTax

I don't think people realize just how incredibly easy it is to use turbotax for a basic return. Dh and I are not that tech savvy but it is beyond easy.

For years my DH did it himself online, until my BIL told him about the accountant that he uses. DH went to him and that year our return was a couple of thousand more than in the past. When you use an accountant, they get you the most money possible so it's worth paying a couple of hundred.

Also, if you're audited, it's easier to have an accountant on your case.
