When you take Challah, does it specifically need to be done after it rises?
It seems to me that it would be so much easier to take it beforehand so that it's not in the oven at the same time as anything else I bake.

Oh, and I have a batch of dough kneading in the Kitchen-Aid now, so all quick responses welcome!

taking challah can be done as soon as the dough is mixed, however it also depends on if you are baking the whole batch of dough in one session or freezing some for later use. I suggest getting a good book on the mitzvah and learning it. I like the one by rabbi jaeger (it alsohas candle lighting in detail)

I take challah an hour after it rises before braiding the challah.

thanks for responding. I usually do it after It rises too (cause that's what my mother did) but do you need to let it rise?

I know this is kind of spinoff of the topic - but what do you usually do with the hafroshos challah piece? my mom always burns it at the bottom of the oven but that has always made me nervous...

I put in the freezer and burn all the pieces together before pesach-give to dh to take somewhere. They burn in some places every erev shabbos.
