took me a while to figure out how to pronounce lingerie and rendezvous. I pronounced both phonetically until I found out it was lahn zhi ray, and rahn day voo.

Similarly, I thought the word "fiery" was pronounced like "feary". I never realized it was the same word as "Fire-y"

Is the word promenade always pronounced as Promenod, or is it sometimes pronounced the way it looks? I don't know how to pronounce it when I read the book Barnyard Dance to my son.

My family pronounces the "cau" cauliflower the same way as "because". But everyone else I know pronounces it "cahliflower". I think they're both valid, but boy did I argue with my classmates about it as a kid.

Pro men ahde - is the place and correct me if I'm wrong, but to pro men ayde is to walk on the former.. (however, I just looked it up and both pronunciations are correct, but that's how I did it....I pro me nayd on the pro men ahd)

As for creek - that's a dialect thing...it depends on where you live. In NY however, a creeeeek is what you swim in, a crick is what's hanging out if your bathing suit falls down.

according to what I learned in phonetics, these words are:

promenade: proh-muh-nahd, or prohm-nahd
rendez-vous: raWn-deh-voo
nougat: noo-gah
HermÃ¨s: er-mes
Peugeot: puh-zhoh

in French at least...

I ahve this problem also except it is with the street in Jerusalem named Pines. I try to say it the ENglish way (likes the trees) since the Hebrew way sounds offensive to my ears.

I grew up next to Rehov Pines in Petach Tikva. It's pronounced PEE-nais. We didn't get it wrong... very often.

ive found most of this thread embarrassing bcos im sposed 2 b an english spkr and it appears I havent got a clue embarrassed

but one thing im confident abt is peugeot - should b pronounced "per-geot" bcos the french word 4 little is "peu", and its a french name...

Some people say rooooof, some say ruf.

Also the word shone.
In America, Ive heard it pronounced as shown, but in Canada as shah-n.

I know someone who thought "Chicago" was "Chik-a-go," emphasis on the first syllable.

My husband says Feb-u-ary instead of Feb-ru-ary. This is why I don't respect him. It's almost as bad as being married to a man who says nuc-u-lar instead of nuc-le-ar, or li-berry instead of li-brar-y.

Can I get a get for this?

when I was in elementary school (this was a looonnng time ago), there was an attempted hostage rescue in iran. when our teacher was telling us about it, she kept saying "helicopter"- but pronounced it heh-lee-copter, and it bothered me so much that I couldnt even listen to the class-it sounded like nails on a blackboard to me!!!!

It got really complicated when Mr. Piness who lives on Rechov Pines, got penalized.

As far as overreacting, little Ms. Technic, I'll have you know that he also leaves his cereal bowl in the sink in the morning without even rinsing it, so by the time I get to it, it's kind of sticky. Between that and the Feb-u-ary thing, I think I'd have a pretty good case.
