what do I do? Is it safe to let him cio and he'll somehow figure out how to get down?

When he's awake, you can try bending him in the middle so that he plops down. After a few practices, he'll get the idea.

That phase doesn't usually last that long (a couple days to a week). I would wait on the cio until he can get down.

I put my dd in a pack in play to sleep during this stage. She couldn't easily pull up without the bars of the crib. By the time she figured out how to pull up on the pack and play she had also figured out how to get down.
