I want to take the NYIP course. I was just talking to a friend who wants to learn photography as well- is it the type of thing I can split with her? she doesn't want to do the assignments just read the material....any info would be great! Also it's between that course and taking one privately with a lady photographer she isnt the greatest but is the only one in my area who can teach it....

When I did research on this, it seemed that NYIP wasn't that great an option. I'm not sure as to how you can split the work between you two. I would not recommend you learn by someone that isn't good, and definitely if she isn't someone professional.
You can get the book by Brian Peterson (forgot the name of the book now) that can teach you ALL the fundamentals of photography.
