I enjoyed the first Martha Grimes I read. But as I read more I found each one ended up revolving around some really bizarre and not clean secret. As in, some books I'll censor for myself (as in black out certain words or paragraphs & keep the book) if there's just a bit of off-color stuff, but these were entirely based on those topics.
OP asked for non-gory, not necessarily clean, but I'm just mentioning for those who care about that.
