In the woods there was a house
from a window I looked out
saw a rabbit in distress
running through the woods.
Help me, help me
the rabbit cried.
from the hunter I must hide
won't you let me come inside
to be safe and warm
is that how it ends?

We sang a different version of the rabbit song.
In a cabin in the woods
A little girl at the window stood,
saw a rabbit running by
stopping at my door.
Help me , help me, help me he cried
All the hunters will shoot me ????
Little rabbit come inside,
and safely you'll ?????

Doesn't it continue "Grandma, Grandma sick in bed/called the doctor, this is what he said/"Grandma, Grandma you're not sick/all you need is a big fat kick"? Or am I sadly confused? And I also remember "cocoa pop". but I don't know how it began.

Whoops, I just read goldrose's post. Now it comes back to me too.
I learned the rabbit song also, more like lucky's version:
In a little house in the woods,
a little man by the window stood,
saw a rabbit running by,
knocking at my door.
"Help me, help me, help me," he cried
"or the hunters will shoot me alive."
"Little rabbit, come inside
and safely you shall live."
How about
On top of spaghetti
all covered in cheese (or grease, in the frum version)
I lost my poor meatball
when somebody sneezed....
(there are four stanzas or so, so I won't write them all.)
On top of a hill stood an old Chevrolet
with its fenders touching the ground.
I opened the door
and I fell through the floor
and the roof came tumbling down. etc. etc.
Same tune:
She sailed away on a sunny, sunny day
on the back of a crocodile...

oh, that's a good one sarahd!
it rolled off the table
and onto the floor
and then my poor meatball
rolled out of the door.
It rolled into the garden
and under a bush
and then my poor meatball
was nothing but mush.
The mush was so tasty
so tasty you see
and early that summer
grew into a tree.
So if you eat spaghetti
all covered with cheese
hold on to your meatballs
and don't ever sneeze!
did I get it right?

don't remember this but do remember this:
Quote: | Same tune:
She sailed away on a sunny, sunny day
on the back of a crocodile... |
you see, said she
it's as plain as it can be
we're sailing down the Nile
the crock winked his eye
as she waved them all goodbye
smiling a great big smile
?
and the smile was on the croc-o-dile

At the end of the ride
the lady was inside
and the smile was on the crocodile.
I know the meatball song a bit different:
(from after "was nothing but mush")
A truck ran it over
it died the next day
I buried my meatball
on Memorial Day.
Later on in my lifetime
as you can see,
my poor little meatball
became a big meatball tree.
Eilu v'eliu...
How about
The other day (the other day)
I saw a bear (I saw a bear)
Up in the woods (up in the woods)
Away up there (away up there) etc.

ah!
Quote: | I know the meatball song a bit different: |
definitely not the traditional version!
I looked up the lyrics google and see I was missing this stanza:
Quote: | The tree was all covered,
All covered with moss,
And on it grew meatballs,
And tomato sauce. |

I saw a bear (I saw a bear)

Away up there (away up there) etc. |
yeah, I can sing it but don't remember what comes next

I saw a bear (I saw a bear)
Up in the woods (up in the woods)
Oh way up there (Oh way.....
he looked at me
I looked at him
he seized up me
I seized up him
he said to me
I see you aint
got any gun
why don't u run
(not sure about the words of that one above)
and so I ran
away from there
up in the woods
oh way up there
in front of me
there was a tree
the biggest tree
that you ever did see
the lowest branch
was 10 feet up
I'd have to jump
and trust my luck
and so I jumped
into the air
I missed that branch
oh way up there (again unsure of the words)
but don't you fret
and don't you frown
I caught that branch
on the way back down

that's good! your writing it out reminded me that I could check for missing parts in google
I found this:
The Bear
Echo Song
Written By: Unknown
The other day,
(The other day)
I met a bear,
(I met a bear)
Away up there,
(Away up there)
A great big bear!
(A great big bear!)
The other day I met a bear,
A great big bear a way up there!
He looked at me
(He looked at me)
I looked at him
(I looked at him)
He sized up me
(He sized up me)
I sized up him
(I sized up him)
He looked at me, I looked at him,
He sized up me, I sized up him.
He said to me
(He said to me)
"Why don't you run?
("Why don't you run?)
I see you don't
(I see you don't)
Have any gun"
(Have any gun")
He said to me, "Why don't you run?
I see you don't have any gun."
And so I ran
(And so I ran)
Away from there
(Away from there)
And right behind
(And right behind)
Me was that bear
(Me was that bear)
And so I ran away from there,
And right behind me was a that bear.
Ahead of me
(Ahead of me)
I saw a tree
(I saw a tree)
A great big tree
(A great big tree)
Oh, golly gee!
(Oh, golly gee!)
Ahead of me there was a tree,
A great big tree, oh, golly gee!
The lowest branch
(The lowest branch)
Was ten feet up
(Was ten feet up)
I had to jump
(I had to jump)
And trust my luck
(And trust my luck)
The lowest branch was ten feet up,
I had to jump and trust my luck.
And so I jumped
(And so I jumped)
Into the air
(Into the air)
And missed that branch
(And missed that branch)
Away up there
(Away up there)
And so I jumped into the air,
And missed that branch away up there.
Now don't you fret
(Now don't you fret)
And don't you frown
(And don't you frown)
I caught that branch
(I caught that branch)
On the way back down
(On the way back down)
Now don't you fret and don't you frown,
I caught that branch on the way back down.
That's all there is
(That's all there is)
There is no more
(There is no more)
Until I meet
(Until I meet)
That bear once more
(That bear once more)
That's all there is, there is no more,
Until I meet that bear once more.
The end, the end
(The end, the end)
The end, the end
(The end, the end)
The end, the end
(The end, the end)
The end, the end!
(The end, the end!)
The end, the end, the end, the end,
This time it really is the end!

Your Google source has excellent grammar. I learned it
..I see you ain't got any gun
and
This is the end, there ain't no more.
Instead of "oh golly gee", we sing, "Oh lordy me".

you will be thrilled to learn (thanks to google) that you are (partially) right:
Quote: | Shimmy, Shimmy Cocoa-Pop
Afro-American clapping chant
Down, down baby, down by the roller coaster,
Sweet, sweet baby, I'll never let you go.
(spoken)
Shimmy shimmy cocoa pop, shimmy shimmy pow!
Shimmy shimmy cocoa pop, shimmy shimmy pow!
Gramma, Gram-mama sick in bed,
Call the doctor and the doctor said,
(spoken)
Let's get the motion of the head, ding-dong.
Let's get the motion of the hands, clap, clap.
Let's get the motion of the feet, stomp, stomp.
Put it all together and what do you get?
Ding-dong, clap, clap, stomp, stomp.
Say it all backwards and what do you get?
Stomp, stomp, clap, clap….. ding-dong! |
