A bit off topic but I can't understand the use of pre-filled chanukka lights in plastic cups!! Seriously, anybody with a bit of seichel understands that plastic is NOT a fire proof material even if the item is being sold in stores.
Don't see the fascination with pre-filled cups. And much more expensive too.

There's also 7 DAY Yartzite candles in plastic.
???

I was thinking about Yartzeit candles actually. Many people (including me) usually light a 24-48 hour candle when there's a 2 -3 days yom tov. Why is this any less dangerous than leaving a menorah lit?

It looks like they did but the fire spread too quickly.

Oy.

I think kids need to be taught that part of chillul/kiddush Hashem is doing a mitzva safely. EG don't use a dangerous body of water for a mikva, light shabbos and chanuka candles safely. When readers of the NYT read this article what are they thinking?

Not any different than the sadness and horror anyone with a heart feels when the inevitable X-Mas fires occur because a tree was too dry or the lights being used short circuited.

It is horribly sad whenever what should be a celebration for anyone of any faith turns into a terrible conflagration.

I always place it in a ceramic bowl and then the bowl on a ceramic dish.

The girl is up and stable.
The father woke up but they sedated him.
The 13 year old went to Israel. I don’t know about the other 2 boys.

At least in Israel the long lasting candles come in glass cups, not plastic. I light mine on a ceramic base with my candles and one on the counter near the stove for cooking.

The yahrtzeit light sits solidly on a flat surface, and is completely contained solid. Unless you have a cat jumping on the counters, if you place it solidly in the middle, its unlikely to fall over. (Maybe it could be knocked over, but someone would be there to do it.) And even if the container broke -- not likely, since its made for this purpose -- the candle is a solid, not a liquid; its not going anywhere.

In this tragedy, there was glass cup containing a liquid that was on fire. When the cup broke, the flaming liquid spread. Shabbat candles and Chanukah candles also have a risk of falling over, being in an elevated holder.

Just thinking
Is there a way to make pre filled cup with some type of salt or baking soda on the bottom that could prevent the oil from spreading if the glass should break

Heartbreaking! I’m sick to my stomach.
This family has done amazing chessed. The grandfather has helped Jews (some people I know) escape from syria in the 1990s at the risk of his life.
They are truly special people and this is so so sad!
Hashem, ad maasi????
