You ask how I would respond. I'd tell the truth, and explain it in a completely nonchalant manner. Sad as it is, harlots exist, they're part of our world, and when you explain these sorts of things to children in the same way you'd discuss tigers having stripes or how trees grow, the less likely they are in spending too much time on the topic. Don't sell your kid short, they can tell when we're uncomfortable or skirting an issue, and that's just going to lead to even more curiosity on the subject.

There are harlots in the Bible, you can't understand the Bible if you don't know what a harlot is. How did Tamar get pregnant? She dressed up as a harlot and got her father in law to have s*x with her. Many Jews today are the descendants of Tamar; this is not something we need to hide.
