In tenth grade one of our teachers had a baby and the substitute ran out of things to teach us because she was ahead of schedule. So she taught us hilchas tefillin. Three fathers pulled their daughters out of school, the whole community was on wheels.

At my seminary we learned Ein Yaakov, which is a compilation of Agadata from Gemara. A lot of girls transfered to my sem from another one that they felt was too heavy on the gemara and not enough hashkafah and Tanach.

Actually it says in Gemara that a woman/girl should NOT learn Gemara. I think its abit ironic that some women do.

Because they understood what their tafkid (role) was in life, and had quite enough to do to get that done. And because they weren't influenced by non-Jewish feminists who say that you are only worth something if you do what men do.

I heard from a Lubavitch rav that the Rebbe said that it is okay for girls to learn Gemara in our times...if the world worked the way it should, would there even be bais Yaakov? that was controversial in the beginning, yet seen as needed now...
(That being said, we aren't Lubavitch and I've never learned Gemara...but I can see the reasoning behind the Rebbe's position. I'll worry about that one when I'm thoroughly conversant on everything that ISN'T controversial!

Recently, my husband was looking through some teshuvos (Shaarei halacha Uminhag) and the Rebbe says there that girls or women learning Gemara should learn the ones that are practical for women that have to do with things that are nogea to them.
There also is a famous Yechidus with the Belzer Rebbe , in which this was spoken about. , the general idea of girls learning: because of what it says that he who teaches his daughter Torah (she'b'al Peh) it is "k'ilu m'lamdah tiflus" as though he has taught her frivolity.
The Rebbe explained, that in this generation, the girls have already been exposed to tiflus, (as in outside influences, especially in secular learning), so learning Torah is necessary to counteract that. Girls have questions, which are already there and they must have answers. It's not like in previous generations, where girls were accepting and had kabbolas ol to continue practicing Yiddishkeit fully, whether they understood or not, or had questions. Now, if you don't provide answers, girls will not accept that, and they will go elsewhere for "answers" - to the outside world.
The Belzer Rebbe had said something about how "our" girls don't need this (that they are sheltered). The Rebbe reacted rather strongly that all Jewish youth is "our" youth, and must receive chinuch.
The topic of girls learning Gemara came up. I don't recall that well, but the Rebbe spoke favorably about it.
