I know multiple Bat-Els and Bat-Tzions (all in Israel) and they have no nicknames. Never heard of Batzi.

Not OP, but maybe this is her way of naming "for" a male whose name started with a B. I know many people who were names that way.

So are Masha, Brana, Charna, Agi, Nena, Rani, Lana, Ella, and the list goes on and on (not just Polish, but Hungarian). In fact, a large amounts of Yiddish names have Vernacular roots...

There are B names like Bunya and Butse, but I don't think OP is looking for that, although if it's your grandmother's name go ahead.
