She can always save a gift card and use at a later point, maybe to have a fun outing with friends.
I don't think I'd do cash for under $10, but a $5 gift card to an ice cream shop is fine, imo.

In terms of getting paid, there are some and some. I learned my lesson as a parent and didn't allow my girls to take jobs in backyard camps if they were underpaying. It's alot of work, often the JC's are left in charge while the owner goes to put up her family's supper or laundry, etc...and if the pay wasn't fair, my girls would say no thank you.
Ditto to a big camp that did not treat their counselors right. One year a certain camp had a hard time getting girls to come back...they learned that counselors need to be treated fairly.
