Don’t make it seem like you thought I was referring to kids not having played dates. It doesn’t make your point look good.

I’m referring to some serious problems that kids got into over so much time home.

I'm reacting to your histrionics. "Destroyed for life" because of decreased social interaction over a one-year period.

Do you know what destroys you? Death. Do you know what is terrible? Permanent heart damage.

And sure, the restrictions have been tough. But these kids will be fine.

Why can't schools open and everyone get services with masks and social distancing?

Well, that was the plan. To flatten the curve, then to have schools and etc etc with restrictions. Unfortunately, people didn't want to follow the rules.

That said, our schools are open, with masks and social distacing, as are NYC public schools. Let's hope it stays that way.

What's unfair about threads like this is that it completely ignores the other side and the damage that results from harsh restrictions. Yes Covid is deadly. That is a fact. But shutdowns are also deadly. It's a double edged sword. We have to pick our poison.

How many more suicides will there be in the US because of poverty, loneliness, and depression that comes with a shutdown? How many more people will die in the coming years because they've been at home, not doing their routine, not exercising, and not going to doctors appointments? There are almost 100 million Americans that are currently diagnosed with heart disease, lung disease. or diabetes. If 1% of them die as a result of not seeing their doctor or not getting their medication, that's 1 million deaths. How many millions of Americans suffer from addiction and don't have access to treatment? Again, if 1% of those people die, we are talking about many lives.

So while covid is deadly and real, we must consider the consequences of shutting down things as well. What will be of the of the millions of workers who were employed by small businesses that had to close? What does the future hold for those people? Poverty, unemployment, and depression. I don't know what the answer is. I just hate seeing threads that keep throwing out data from one side of the argument while not considering the other.

What about the children with severe behavioral needs who won't keep their mask on? Nonverbal ASD and the like.
How do you social distance in such a classroom?

And SD in a regular classroom requires buildings to stretch 3x the current size to accommodate the students.

Here in Israel, special education classes continued even during the lockdowns. Was that not the case in the US?

I do not think they were required to wear masks if they could not do so (I'm not positive about that, though). It was decided that this was a risk worth taking, because the consequences of not having these particular kids in a framework was too high.

Also, classes for children below 5th grade are closed only for very strict lockdowns periods here, because children of that age are generally too young to be left alone if their parents are working.

Everything is about balancing risks.

My neighbor(NYC) has high school kids out of school since last March, does she not know her school is open?

This is simply false. No you did not all lock down, willingly or otherwise. Following the rules is meaningless when some states simply had no rules. There were no barriers between states, between those trying to isolate and those who didn't care a bit about COVID. There were state leaders refusing to shut anything, making a show about eating publicly in restaurants. That's why it kept on spreading and it's taking forever to get under control.

Your president at first implied COVID was a hoax, then made it seem like taking cautionary measures was questionably helpful, then didn't have any organised federal response in place, then had the federal government appropriate PPEs away from states while saying it was each state's responsibility to fend for itself. Then he got COVID himself, got the best healthcare for himself (which is btw paid for with US taxes, aka socialised healthcare), then made it seem like COVID is no big deal.

It's terrible that there was no organised response and therefore some people put in all the work to stay safe while people around them spread the virus and kept it circulating.

I agree that it's crazy that some places like casinos and movie theatres are open (if they are) when COVID is circulating. That doesn't mean the other places should be open too.

Ok so lets see if Biden waves a. Wand

This is something we've rehashed over and over. The part I always find it hard to understand is that we're all Torah observant Jewish women here (or that's what Yael would like us to be). We all have as one of our top priorities- often to the exclusion of other priorities- saving and preserving lives. Do people realize that one percent means one out of a hundred people? When hundreds of thousands of people are getting sick- that's a lot of deaths. (Not to mention the people who thankfully survive but spend weeks and months suffering.)
Is this endless discussion a result of some problem with doing the math? Or do people just conclude that every single one of the one out of a hundred who die will be someone very old and sick that they didn't know personally so it doesn't matter?

Actually NYC public schools are NOT fully open. Only graded k-5 are open. Grades 6-12 are fully in person.

Well yes, because really they all get money from the government and therefore the government controls them. Besides the doctors who you see on whatsapp clips, those are the only ones who speak the truth.

Yes but let’s just repeat it’s about play dates because I totally insinuated that.

And why the h*ll is my neighbor’s school closed for an entire year?

So in order to preserve the economy, should we encourage people to eat at restaurants and work out at the gym and just accept that they will probably catch covid? Big weddings and holiday gatherings also build the economy but they also aid in the spread of coronavirus. Which path should we take?

This is absolutely not what Biden said. Did you hear what he said?
He appointed scientific advisors to his cabinet. That's not what they said.
It's not what Dr Fauci said.
It's not what a frum epidemiologist who advises our community said.
Trump did say many times that it was all going away:
In April (he said that at the very beginning). In the summer (he said that a little later). With hydroxychloroquine. With bleach. The end was right around the corner (late August or September). Etc

Yes, NYC public schools are open for lower grades, at least. In fact, in a battle between NYC and NY State, the City was allowed to keep schools open even if the covid rate exceeds 9%.

About 700,000 city students chose to learn from home full-time, regardless of openings.

IIRC, high schools opened, but closed in November.

That's because Biden said all the deaths were Trump's fault. It stands to reason that a new president with new and better ideas will stop the problem in it's tracks. Covid should be over in 24 hours from now.

And not only that, but even once schools reopened, services were not immediately reinstated for in person. Not everything can be done, or done well or effectively, through telehealth.
