I have a first grader and we often read chapter books to her at night.
We've done Charlotte's Web, Wizard of Oz, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory (as well as other Roald Dahl books), All the Ramona books (by Beverly Cleary), The Invisible Veterinarian series, Little House in the Big Woods (we are hoping to read the rest of the series too).

We're currently reading one of the Ralph Mouse books by Beverly Cleary--though I forgot the exact title.

Heidi heckelbeck, Princess in Black, and Owl Diaries are all cute, with lots of pictures, and probably just above her level.

I probably wouldn't read Charlotte's Web just yet.
The ending is also a bit sad where Charlotte dies.
It's a beautiful book, but I'd it's it's more for a third grader.

I'm just curious-I also have a first grader. If I'd read most of these books to her, most likely I'll have to explain every few pages what's going on. she wouldn't' be able to follow along or understand on her own.

Is that a concern??

It's good to read books that are SLIGHTLY above your child's level.

But if you have to keep explaining what is going on, it is probably too hard.

There are great picture books, you don't have to read chapter books to first grader.

Keep reading and her comprehension will keep improving!
