How hot does it get? I have the Hamilton beach urn and it doesn’t stay hot enough. I don’t remember where I got it so I can’t check the official temp.

It's a West Bend. It's not as hot as straight from the kettle on the flame. Better than all the others we tried for our home and we tried many (the Hamilton Beach is terrible. Use them for crockpots not urns.)

For commercial use we also like the Avantco.
This is the one I have a lot of experience with. Be careful to read all the specs. There are a few different ones and some are too tall to fit under kitchen cabinet.

Thanks. I’ll try the original one you posted.

I love and hate that there are so many options!

Isnt there a health advantage to using stainless steel over aluminum?

Buy one without a pump since the pumps fail after a few months. Ask for the West Bend stainless with spigot.
The ones in the Jewish stores come with a cord that disconnects fully from the urn. The one on Amazon has the cord permanently connected to the urn.

I bought this years ago for a family member and the outside of the urn got very hot. They were afraid to use this urn around their little kids.

ra_mom, do you have this problem with yours?

Heres an Avantco review on Amazon from 2014. It may have been improved since.

It doesnt sound good.

2.0 out of 5 stars It has both good and bad points
Reviewed in the United States on March 11, 2014
We use it to keep water hot for a period of 24-48 hours. The water is actively boiling all this time, rather than being at a slow simmer. At the end of the time, the water has a milky look to it. I poured some into a large, clear glass. After a few hours a white substance settled on the bottom, leaving the rest of the water clear. This would not be noticed when making coffee. I'm worried about this substance and may find a lab to test it. I wash out the urn after every use, and yet the whitish substance reappears. Also, when I wipe dry the black piece in the middle of the bottom, there is black residue on the paper towel. For the past 30 years I used a Farberware stainless steel urn in the same way without any of these issues. I can't comment on how the urn works for making coffee.

I bought the 30 cup Avantco and so far so good.

Its a very uniquely designed sort of clumsy large spout handle. Do you push it on top of where the water comes out, or below where the water comes out?

Do you use it with the metal stick and round basket inside?

If youre only using it for water, is it necessary to use the basket? Any advantage?
