Most of the books above I read as a kid.
Good memories... |
I can Call You Ima is a really nice book. Leah Fried also wrote another book about a couple that divorces due to religious differences. In the end they reconcile. I really liked that book.

OMG. I just googled it and see that it was made into a movie! Like a proffessional movie with real.actors. how is that even possible? This was one of my all time favorite books.

Aside for the Jewish press there was the monthly Olameinu magazine and the Jewish observer. There were also Marcus Lehman books like the broken bracelet.

Yes! I read it about 30 years ago. I remember thinking it was good school/camp play material.

Yes and I still think Search My Heart is an amazing book..I still have it.
I also got the Olomeinu and Jewish Observer. (As well as the Hilights, to round things out..)
I'm pretty sure Marcus Lehman did not write the broken Bracelet.
I read all of his books and novelette as well.
My favorite is Del Monte, Family Y Aguilar, The adopted Princess and Bustenai.
Also, Itamar is now being illustrated as a comic in the Circle.
The Adopted Princess was illustrated s a comic recently as well..I think by the Mishpacha Junior.
Nice to see the stories we grew up with being made available for the kids today.

Right- maybe The Broken Bracelet was by Gershon Kranzler. I can check tomorrow. I have it downstairs on the bookshelf.
Don’t forget the Horizon magazine. It was monthly.

The Exiles of Crocodile Island. I probably read that a thousand times
Family Secrets by Sarah Birnhack
The Scent Of Snowflowers
Anything by Libby Lazewnik. Can’t remember the titles.
I disagree that the writing was poorer then. Some of the serialised stories in the Mishpacha are very well written, but I find that most novels published originally as such are not that great.

I recently gave my girls Family Secrets and they loved it.
It’s such fun seeing all these books mentioned here. Lehman and Btw, who wrote the Rabbi and the Priest?

Anyone remember the Search for Miri and the sequel Between the Thorns?
Also, did anyone read The Lost Children of Tarshish or The Flight to Seven Swan Bay?
Both books (though very different) are stories about people who got stuck on an island and had to figure out how to manage until they were rescued.
Somewhat like Hatchet.

Yes the horizon was short-lived. I think I still have a few of them.

On that topic, does anyone think that Family Secrets contains mature content (emotionally) for young readers? My daughter is a voracious reader at 9, but I wouldn't have her read it. I was surprised when a friend of hers was encouraged to read it by her mother.
