Some pet owners will prefer to leave their animals in the care of someone who is used to animals and has experience taking care of them, instead of a child whose parents hope they will learn responsibility on someone else's pet!

Fair enough, but I know of one family where the older boy (10ish) started taking on gigs caring for SMALL dogs with his parents supervision and involvement when he was younger, until he got old enough to do it himself. No animals were harmed in the process.

I have 2 cats. If we ever had to be away for shabbos to a place where we can’t take the cats with us, we’ve hired an 11/12 year old to come and feed them, play with them.
Dogs are a different story, they’re needier than cats and require more involved care.
