Is matzah in the oven a true story? Because I resent Holocaust-based fiction. The Holocaust has countless true stories, both tragic and inspiring, that people can write about. Making stuff up trivializes the reality.

Sorry you’re right. There is a song in Yiddish that is the same story as “Al Hatzadikim”… does anyone know which one I’m referring to?

By matzah baking there is an old man who insists on putting the matzah in the oven. They tell him that there are others you don’t have to do this. He said No! Let me tell you why I need to and you’ll see you’ll let me. I was 19 in Auschwitz and they made me put the people in the oven. I remember when they I had to put in Duda’le and how many people I recognized. Let this be a kapara you think I see matzos in the oven no I see all the faces of the people I put in. Every matzah should be a kapara for each person I put in the oven. Oh how I wish.. be moichel me tatteh in himmel be moichel me klal yisroel. |
Beautiful summary! I'd like to add on the significance of the matzos as he calls out kohein, Levi and yisroel, correlating to the yidden he nebech was forced to put into the oven "another, kohein, another Levi another yisroel...." gutrenching

Yes. It was written and sung by my brother Eli about our brother Yisroel and his kallah Elisheva, and the afikomen our father asked for in return for them. I was going to share it as my song I can't get through without crying, but figured maybe I'm just biased, of course.
Coming up on the 5th yahrtzeit this Pesach, and holding my own little Yisroel this year, makes it extra tough...
In the same vein, here is a song by Elisheva's family, sung by her nephew:

It's amazing how your family and the Kaplan family gave Klal Yisrael so much Chizuk after their tragic accident. How you were able to take the pain an build from it. Their Neshamos should continue to have an Aliya from all the Chessed.
