You can go to Lake George/Lake Placid although Sunday-Thursday is probably a bit too long. New Hampshire/White Mountains has enough to do for that length of time. Niagara is probably your best bet.
Unless your kids will enjoy the experience of airport/flying, I wouldn't do it. Flying with kids is a real hassle and there aren't many places with nice weather to fly to, coming from upstate NY.

I loved Vail but I Between the jet lag and the altitude change I wouldn’t go with kids for 4 days.
