Do you work on chol hamoed?
My employer is saying that it's a work day, but it's ok if I don't work.
I assume that it would then come off my vacation days...?

Unfortunately, he's right, but most people work a shortened day, so they can also be with their families.
Also, if you have young children, you may have other zchuyot because there's no childcare. Look into it

In many places its a half day, but legally Chol haMoed is a working day. You can choose totake the time off, but that mean using your ימי חופש.
