It's best to have a set time when you do homework. Put it into the routine.
I'd say, ok kids, soon its suppertime, then we'll do homework, and afterwards we can play a card game, and have a snack. Then we'll start baths.
It doesn't work when you don't realize they have homework, like it's Thursday but there is still homework, or having to remember to do it on Sunday.
I dislike homework. I especially dislike the charts I need to fill out what exactly my daughter davened over yomtov/ shabbos.
Btw with davening on shabbos and sunday it's the same thing- put it into routine. If I forget and try when they're already on their way to play with their friends it's over.

Consensus here is basically: talk to the teacher about how much work is coming home.
Personally I rarely give hw (If it’s once a week it’s a lot) other than Chumash chazara or a math sheet.

The older they get the more it becomes their responsibility. Also put a max of 5 to 10 minutes. Teachers don't expect more
