I enjoyed this recipe so much I just had to share it. I reduced the sugar from the original recipe, and its still sweet!
7 apples sliced thin
1/4 cup (brown) sugar
2 Tb cornstarch
1 tsp cinnamon
Mix together gently
Topping:
1 cup flour
1 cup oats
1/2 cup sugar
1/2 cup earth balance shortening or margarine (you can try oil and let me know how it is)
1/2 tsp vanilla
pinch of salt
mix until crumbly
spread apples in a greased 9x 13 pan then crumble topping over it. Bake at 350F until bubbly and light golden. 45-50 minutes.

Do you put a layer of crumbs on the bottom? Or just the apples? I think I will try it now.

I make a variation of this almost every week. I use Granny Smith apples and canola oil instead of earth balance. I put the crumble mixture on the top only. I add 1/2 cup ground flax seed to the crumble mixture for a nice dose of Omega-3's.

I made it once with royal gala apples and it was great, when I made it with green apples the apple part came out pretty sour.
I'm glad you all enjoyed the recipe!

my sister and dd3 made something similar ... it was a miracle it came out yum cause neither of them really knew what to do ... they did however confer with me whether or not I would taste it cause otherwise they would use margarine um like better use the crisco ... I was busy building the succah
they also made some sort of bottom before they put the apples ...
personally as far as apples come using a variety is more fun - even adding a pear or 2 ...

Would this possibly freeze well?
Serves warm or cold? Can I use it for Shabbos?
Thanks

I've made this but I mixed the apples with applesauce and cinamon instead and it also came out amazing and it froze beautifully.

I also do that. I have also tried blueberries, but cranberries are way better. I also have added rhubarb. Also very yummy, but it may be an acquired taste and texture.
(edited to fix a silly typo!)
