My 6 year old dd started piano lessons. Her teacher wanted me to buy a piano, but I didn't think that was wise until I see she really likes it (and even then, it's a big investment). She wanted me to buy something with at least 5 octaves & full size, weighted keys. I really don't want to spend more than $200 & certainly wouldn't mind spending less. I don't want something junky though. Any ideas, oh musical people?

To have an authentic musical experience, you want to be able to have keys that are somewhat weighted (like a piano keyboard). While giving shading and tonality deviations to melodies is tougher on a keyboard, it is GREAT WAY TO START, especially for a child. And to boot, they come with plugs for headphones so nobody's ears will hurt when DS plays his scales over...and over...and over again. Smile A good suggestion is to start with the Yamaha P-70 or P-85. Your best bet is to go on Craig's List or a closeout sale. These can be very expensive, but these are good ways to start.

Also, ask the piano teacher if he wants the child to learn to play a pedal. If so, you can get a plug in one (for the keyboard) for 20 dollars.

Good luck! Smile

PS Sorry--one more thing. There are outlet music stores. You can also RENT a keyboard. It might make sense to rent it for a couple of months to see if the child likes it. If he does, then you can go out and purchase the Yamaha P-70 or P-85. Also, can he practice the piano at a local school, after school hours and/or on Sundays? The local community colleges in my neighborhood allow this. This way, he gets the "authentic" experience but without the cost.

Ok, sorry for blabbing. Good luck! Smile

Check out Craigslist and the like. There are often people looking to give away pianos, and you can get good keyboards cheap once in a while in the musical instruments section.
