I've been asked to plan a chanukah craft for a local public school (ie, kids who aren't Jewish, but who are learning about Chanukah). I was wondering if anyone had ideas of crafts we could do. Simple stuff, please, as we don't have tons of time to collect items such as baby food jars, egg cartons, etc. (which are often required for craft projects.

The age group is: Grade 2&3, and another class of Grade 5&6.

Thanks!!

I made something cute today. I cut four draidels the same size and decorated each one differently. Then stapled them together like a 3-d draidel. you can do edible art-marshmellow for glue and put on a menorah picture with candy corn for lights and asprin candy on menorah.

I second Crafting Jewish! But in a pinch, have the kids decorate cupcakes and make a cupcake menorah, by lining up 9 cupcakes (raise the 9th), stick candles into each one and light.

use model magic to make dreidels or menorahs

make chanukah cards

if u have $ then order the menorah crafts from jewishcrafts or one of those companies - wood pieces that the kids paint and glue, and theyre really cute

1)Our family's eternal go to Chanuka craft is felt squares cut to outline dreidels, let the kids stitch them up on the two sides and point leaving the bag open for Gelt. This is something kids can do quietly while you talk to them. Buy a pack of those plastic craft needles and precut long strips of embroidery thread, makes a really special project they'll remember. WE had them as kids, our kids have them, and every class I've ever taught has enjoyed this project.

OR,

2) go to Chabad.org Kids Holiday Craft section, really cool cut out dreidel shape that makes a treat box, all you have to do is print the two pages, and xerox them. Have the kids color cut and paste. Less mess, no cost. Again, fill with gelt/a real dreidel (used for preschool but did the cutting/pasting myself. Older kids can do it without this help).

Last year, I made the dreidels from Crafting Jewish to decorate my Chanukah table, that was so nice!

Can you post a direct link to the dreidel cut out that needs to be printed? I can't seem to find that.

make menorahs with them so they can have their own one to use for chanukah.

simple one to make is:

peice of wood.
10 small tiles, 9 nuts (screws, not eating nuts)

paint wood any color, glue down tiles in a row, put 2 together for the shamash. on top of each time glue a nut. the chanukah candles fit perfectly into the nuts. Does not take long. kids can also decorate menorah with sequins or anything else.
