She's 10 months old and I REALLY dont think she knows what she is doing. She will be in the middle of a meal and all of a sudden start pursing her lips and blowing and food goes everywhere. I wipe her mouth and ask her to stop but she doesnt cause she doesnt understand me. She sometimes does this spitting thing when she is playing but I dont care then...its when she eats that I and everything in the vicinity get sprayed with food. Happens every meal too.
After it happened this morning my DH asked me to post here to find out if there is any way to teach her not to do this or are we stuck till she starts understanding "no" more?
Thanks.

There lies your problem. You're expecting a baby to distinguish between mealtime and playtime and be able to understand that what's OK for one is not OK for the other. And really, spitting and blowing is much more fun at mealtime when you have a mouthful of stuff and can make it fly. You have to set a policy of "no spitting, period" otherwise you're sending your baby mixed messages. Adults have problems handling mixed messages, a baby kal vachomer.

My dd does this when I feed her. She giggles and blows/sprays the food. I dont really mind, its kind of cute to see how she experiments with new experiences. Its not all the time and I dont want to put her off mealtime so I just giggle along and try to distract her so she gets the food in her mouth and swallows rather than sprays. I dont think their memory is so great that they do it next time on purpose or something like that. Just enjoy the joys of parenthood, B"H!

You both should be wearing long sleeved smocks during mealtimes.

put on a raincoat?
I sometimes work with a babysitting group, and it seems that when the baby has had enough, or she's bored she'll start playing with the food. my observation is that it usually happens with pureed jars, so I'll switch to whatever else the mother sent that's more solid, less sprayable, like a rice cake or biscuit.

What, no one ever heard of bibs and aprons? A cheap plastic poncho seems like a bit much, but if it works, what the hey. You can get them in dollar stores. Or just make a poncho out of a big garbage bag by cutting holes in the bottom for head and arms.

I got long sleeved crafts smocks for us. I'd be embarrased, not to mention uncomfortable, wearing a garbage bag !!!
