I've been using mixes that expired in 2006-7.

Two packages -- one is January, one February. At least, that's how I read it.
OP, what does the package say? "Sell by"? "Best if used by"? Is it whole wheat?
My understanding is that most food is good for quite a while past the expiration date, and I'd think cake mix, properly stored would be among those foods.

If it's wrapped in a sealed plastic bag (like, say, Dunkin Hines) I'd have no hesitation about using it one or two months out.
If it was straight in a box or paper bag, I'd still have no hesitation about using it if I knew it was stored in a dry place. If I thought it was stored in a particularly damp place, I'd worry about using it whether or not it had passed the expiration date.

I meant the stuff from 2010, not 2008. Not sure I'd risk it with something that expired two years ago, even if just for flavor/rising issues. A box of cake mix on sale is $1; the eggs and oil + time + electricity to bake an old one just for it to flop is worth at least that.

All I know is I've been using my DY cake mixes that I stocked up on several years back before the "dairy scare". They expired in September 06 and I'm still using them. In fact, I made a chocolate cake for a party less than a month ago and nobody got sick from it. I also used a brownie mix a couple weeks ago that I bought in 2005 with no ill effects afterward.

I doubt anyone would get sick. the worst would be that the baking powder wouldn't rise.

You better make sure there are no worms in the cake mix.
(I would throw it out.)
