Spinoff of crockpot vs. pot on stove

So, I've been reading this thread and everyone is talking about their delicious cholent.

So, what's your recipe?

Mine used to be good - but I want something new...

I'll give my recipe if people are interested...

I love mine. there is rarely any leftover no matter how much I make.

1 c barley
1 potato, cut into chunks
1 small onion, cut into chunks (less if wer'e having little kids over)
6 chunks (or more) cholent meat
2 cloves garlic, sliced, OR 2 tsp minced garlic from the jar
2 tsp. onion powder
2 tsp. salt
1 t pepper (less if we're having little kids over)
2 T paprika
5 c water

spray the crocpot with PAM. put all ingredients inside and stir. I turn it on just before I light candles and it is delicious by shabbos morning when we eat it!

oh, and I always put a potato kugel wrapped in foil on top of the cholent, in the crockpot. comes out creamy and delicious.

and if I'm feeling extra nice, I'll put in small pieces of hot dog cuz my DH loves it.

and sometimes I'll add a T of cumin for a different flavor.

Question about this, I thought cholent had to be cooked before shabbat started, is this something with different opinions, or something that if asked everyone gets that answer but yet not everyone necessarily realizes that. I specifically ask bec this was something I would not have know if I hadnt asked another question which lead to this being told to me... and then also learned when taking a class on hilchot shabbat - now I have heard this from 3 different MO orthodox Rabbis of different backgrounds in diff communities. (btw I learned that this is specifically for mix of meat and veggies - not if it was only meat alone- but dont remember exact details)

SO has anyone either asked or learned about this specific question and gotten the answer that cholent can be put up raw right before shabbat?

I hope this doesnt come off in any way that I question what others do, its just that I was surprised at learning this, bec I didnt know before hand - I never noticed when the cholent was put up at my mom's house when I was growing up. AND I would have never thought to ask the question of when it had to be put up. So I wonder if its one of those things thats universally accepted law, but not everyone knows - OR if there are different interpretations about this aspect of hichos cholent.

I also thought it needs to be put up a couple of hours at least before shabbos so it is at least half cooked when shabbos comes in.

cholent has to either be cooked to a completely edible point OR so raw that nobody would try to eat it that night. I'll ask my husband for more details when he sobers up Smile

Cheek meat (or other soft meat)
chicken necks
beef necks
marrow bones
chicken wings
chicken feet
barley
navy (pea) beans
potatoes, sliced thickly
paprika
chili powder
dried chili pepper
cayenne pepper
black pepper
white pepper
salt

Cook on low flame. Add kishka (my own recipe as well) when it's halfway cooked.

eeew. my father used to put chicken feet in our soup. thank god the butcher stopped carrying them. maybe that's why I became a vegetarian for a few years in high school.
