My highschooler is going to be taking a subject called computer science. I was wondering what that meant. I know, I'm really not with it. Does it mean computers as a subject or something more technical....I know I'm lame. But, do you know what they learn in computer science?

My son learned in 9th grade. He got a school book and learned some programming with the teacher's guidance. They didn't dissect a computer, if that what "science" means to you

Here, DS is sitting right next to me so I'll ask him.
He says he really didn't learn anything because the teacher wasn't good. Of course (he's not into these things).
He said it was mostly Java programming. Fundamentals. Simple programming constructs: variables, loops. That's from DH who understands these things. I understand home ec.

My son chose computer science for next year as an elective, alongside physics.
I assume we are talking about computer science in high school, with a full 5 pt bagrut by Gr. 12. I can look up his syllabus later and tell you what books he needs to buy.
Like Tamiri, this really isn't my expertise, but I understand it's a demanding, highly academic field. I was told a bagrut in computer science (or in physics) opens a lot of options in the army and at university. It's considered a superior track.
There is another 'computer' track which is 'technologi' (not academic). I forget what it's called - maybe I'll look it up later. That's something totally different.

This was just a ninth grade class. Those who are interested can go on to do a computer 5 point bagrut course. Not my son..
