I just washed mine for the first time in 2 years. I did it myself and the water that picked up was sooooo disgusting!!! I washed them twice and the second time the water was still brown! I am so grossed out. We vacuum our carpets and wash our floors twice a week, plus we don't wear shoes in the house. Why are they so dirty and how often am I supposed to wash them to keep them clean? It was a really big job to do it, not to mention a pain moving things out of the way and waiting for the carpets to dry.
(anon because I kvetched about this to a bunch of people irl)

How DID you wash it?
I have been living in a small appartment for a few months already all with carpets and I just dont know how to wash it! I was thinking of hiring a company to wash it before pesach....

Never, I don't have carpets.
As for the little two feet by three feet rugs next to the bed, well the kids have real ones that get popped into the washing machine twice a week and dh and I have a plastic mat that gets rinsed off three or four times a week.

When I did have carpet ( yech, now that I think of it ), I had it cleaned about every 4-5 months professionally. I found a family based business and they were honest so didn't overcharge me. It's AMAZING what lives in carpet...hatzlacha!

I used a carpet cleaning machine. They rent them out at the supermarket for only about $25 for the day, plus you have to buy the soap for about $15. I was going to hire a company, but it added up to a lot more money (all of my bedrooms are carpeted). I can't imagine having to do it myself so often though.
