Dh uses sock lock things that every time he takes off his socks he puts them in this colored ring.
I would suggest each person in the family has another color ring.
We used to do this with tights, each girl had a dif. colored thread and we had to sew some stitches at the top of the tights before we wore them.
The problems started when we forgot who was what color or we didn't have patience to sew the thread straight away!

I wrote my initial at the top of my tights & my daughters on her tights using either a puff paint pen or silver sharpie.

Another vote for mesh bags here.
I'm not sure what a laundry chute is but could you hang up one mesh bag in everyone's room for socks? When the bag is full the whole bag goes down the chute.
I've only got DHs socks to do but I bought him 14 pairs of identical plain black socks so no matching required. As someone else suggested, maybe one colour per person would work.

I use diaper pins. They don't open in the washer (regular safety pins occasionally do). I have tried sock locks, but I don't think the socks can get as clean where they are bunched together under the sock lock. For any sock that I can't easily identify the owner of, I write that child's initial on the toe with a Sharpie.
