I am posting for a friend. Her dd-age 14 has had her period for about 2 years. Starting about march of this year, her periods have lasted all month long. With just a couple days breather in between. Pediatrician said to go to gyn. gyn put her on the pill-no blood tests or any testing at all. The pill made the girl get real wacky, so gyn changed to a different pill. My friend would prefer to get to the cause of the problem rather than keep her 14 year old on hormones.

They want to go to an endocrinologist, but need the pediatrician to order it. He is the kind of dr. who if he doesnt see it/think it, then it doesnt exsist. So my friend is still working on him for this referral.

I told her I would post the problem here and see if anybody has any ideas of what may be causing this never ending period, and what alternatives they should look into.

She is probably having unavolatory cycle which is common in the beginning years of the period. In older person they might cause infertility but are normal during the teenage years. They are periods without avolutation, so there is never an increase and decline of progesterone. We need decline of progesterone to cause the bleeding. They are treated with the birth control pills that provide progesterone and thus during the seven days when there is no progesterone bleeding happens. Then the new box is started that has progesterone and that heals the uterine lining.
Problem is that they are hormones and thus cause mood swing. But if they work and are able to control her period then that is the diagnosis. As her hormonal pathway matures she will be able to get off them, hopefully.

Either have then change pediatricians, MAKE the idiot doctor give them the referral, see if a GP will see her instead or see if the GYN can write the referral.

My friend had her dh call the pediatrician and insist on the referral. He said okay.

mamochka, are you saying that she needs the progesterone in the pills to stop the bleeding?

Anybody else have any ideas?

My friend had a similar situation, and was on BC pills during high school to regulate it - it did resolve eventually.

it's a hormonal problem, and requires hormones to fix it.

your friend definitely has to insist on the Dr doing blood tests you cant just give hormones just like that without checking out what the underlying problem is. the women's system is very fragile and shouldn't be messed with it might be nothing but on the other hand it might be an imbalance or something else .

Yes, progesterone only pills are one of the options or one of the combinations of progesterone-estrogen.

she does not really have to go to a specialist for blood work. Her pediatrician or OB-gyn can do it. She can also go to an Adolescence doctor who are trained in this, unless her pediatrician is one as well.

I personally feel that it is good for girls to go to pediatricians trained in Adolescence because they are better equipped to deal with teenage issues and also know how to talk to teenagers.

Here is a good article on this broad topic of Dysfunctional Uterine Bleeding
