My friend's making aliya from Canada and would like to have a phone in her house with a Canadian phone number. Does anyone know how to do that and how much it costs?

My husband works for a DSL company - you can have a local US, Canada, or European number, with unlimited calling. They have very good rates and service. PM me for more information.

Majic Jack is definitely the way to go. You can buy it in Radio Shack (The Source) for $49.99, or an American drug store for $39.99. A Canadian phone number costs another $10, and you're good to go for the year. You renew it for $19.99 per year, and they have all sorts of international packages if you want. My daughter made aliyah two years ago, and has been using it for quite a while. Your computer needs to be on, but you can use either a corded phone, or a cordless one. Phone quality is excellent - most times I can't even tell when she's using it. Phone calls for her to the US and Canada are free! And I just have to call a Canadian phone number - we got her the same area code as we are - so we call her for free. I highly recommend it!

Thank you everyone for your replies. I tried to look into MagicJack and just didn't understand it all! Thanks koshermomma for clarifying it. She has to buy it in Canada? She's leaving soon. Does she get the phone number where she buys it or has to go online to register? How does she renew it the next year? Does she have to supply her own phone?

You can buy in the US, Canada or online. I would buy it at The Source, install it on my computer just to make sure it works, and then take it with me. It's really small - not a big deal. When you install it, you pick your phone number. The program asks you which area code you want, and then gives you a list of available phone numbers. You supply the phone (and the computer!) They will send you an email when it's time to renew. It also has voicemail, so people can leave you messages.

You can buy Magicjack here too. So dont worry about that.

My dh needs the phone for work, and we have Vonage - unlimited worldwide calls for $30 / month.

Do you need an actual phone? If you want just through the computer, you can buy a Canadian number through Skype

Thank you everyone. She was very thankful for all the information. She'll look into all her options. She doesn't want through Skype. The connection isn't so good is it?
