Has anyone ever heard of this? Someone mentioned this in passing but I've never heard of it. Have you?

Nope, never heard of it. And afaik, "sheva brachos" the way we do it nowadays is a relatively modern construct. It could be that people like to contribute and share in others' simcha, davening that they should be able to make their own simchas soon.
