I spray outside the house, put gel poison by cracks by doors, but inside I sprinkle a line of cinnamon.

We do. The exterminator who does it claims it's ok for kids to be around it, and I trust him, though I do sometimes wonder if it really is awful
He does it mostly outside though, so no harm there.

I had a really bad infestation of ants this summer and finally had to do it. (Before I would make an oatmeal perimeter outside my house and that seemed to stop them.) I figured out where they were coming in and sprayed only there. Later on I found out where their nests were outside and blasted them. I probably just could have done the latter and it would have been effective, I just couldn't find them before.
