assuming I'm a terrible faster and got a heter not to fast if I can't...
is it better for me to do things not in the spirit of the day if it'll help me fast, or better break my fast but be in the right frame of mind?

That's a question for a rov.
In general, on a fast day, for a lady, if she has to lay in bed all day, it's not what the fast is supposed to accomplish. That's a big reason why dd and I don't fast.
But Tisha B'av and YK are different in that respect. The inyan is to fast.
