When visiting relatives and sleeping over at their house, what is proper to give as a gift?
Do you buy it b/4 hand ?
Do you always give children gifts?
I am undecided. I spend a small fortune to get there (500). And I don't want to always feel I MUST give the children a gift.
I like the gift giving to be more casual.
Buy takeout for Shabbos. Eat out at a restaurant. Select gifts with the children.
In this example I am visiting grandchildren, ds, and dil.
How do you handle gift-giving while visiting?

For friends, yes. For relatives, no. I would not expect relatives to bring a gift if they are coming to visit.

I think it is nice to bring small gifts for grandchildren. Or, take them out to buy something for them is also fine. Doesn't have to be big.

This. Especially if you don't visit often.

I think it's a matter of personal taste, and as long as you express your love, you can do as you wish. What about bringing something that doesn't cost much money? You can give a kid a gum wrapper bracelet that you made for them and have them be thrilled.
I have such fond memories of grandparents and other relatives visiting and bringing gifts. I can't wait to do it for my own grandchildren, and would likely feel that way even if the family lived far away.
My niece's Bat Mitzvah is coming up this summer. It is in another country, and the travel and hotel is expensive. But I still want to give her a gift for her special day from us, because that will be something to hold on to and remember the special time.
Maybe it might be a bit less expensive than what I would get if she lived closer, but not proportionally.
But again, that's just me, and the experience I had growing up. Your mileage may vary.

Yes, I've come around in my thinking. I would like to gift DGC when appropriate.
We asked CIL what to get.
For DGS, A rescue helicopter
For DGD, A bag with dolls.
Something tells me GC have something very specific in mind. We will need more detailed info.
