1. Can I use the oil we have left from last year? It's about 1/2 a bottle (definitely enough for the nights we'll actually be home to light, and then some). If not, what can I do with the oil?

2. Does anyone have any ideas on how to keep the lighting surface (a table) oil-free? I have the hardest time getting the spills up afterwards... And I discovered that grease remover/dissolvant doesn't work on the glass cups. I'll buy new ones this year, but any ideas for those?

Marion -

As for your first question - I don't think it's a problem to use leftover oil from last year. We have almost a full bottle left and are planning on doing the same.

I saw a great cleaning tip for the glass oil cups:
Put them in a bowl with hot water and LAUNDRY DETERGENT and let them soak for a couple of hours or overnight. Wash as usual.
They come out sparkling!!!

cover the surface with aluminum foil or clear contact paper. it's not the prettiest, but it will do the job.

We used to use leftover oil. Now DH buys the ready made cups.

As for cleaning cups, after chanukah, we soak them in a negel vasser bowl with dish soap (it's made to fight grease) & hot water.

We cover our window sill with silver foil.

You certainly can use the oil from last year

We let the cups soak in Lestoil; it's an associated-with-chanukah smell to me, like ammonia and turkey for Pesach!

Where do you think they get the oil from that we shouldn't use it - it's from industrial sized cans that they put into those little plastic bottles w/stickers.

As far as cleaning - hot water and soap and some elbow grease

Oh and thanks for reminding me - I better go find my menorahs

Definitely cover the table with aluminum foil.
