It's our anniversary this week iyH and it's a big one We were thinking of dinner and a show.
We both have not been to a broadway show. He is ok with chick flick type of things. Nothing artsy or non musical. I was thinking maybe Newsies or Once. Any recommendations?

Would we appreciate it if I never really saw the Wizard of Oz and Dh probably never even heard of it? I don't think he would go for "witchy" stuff.

Newsies is AWESOME -- if you love dancing, that's a great show to see. High-energy, upbeat, and very few female characters. They created a love plotline for the main character in there just to get in a female (it was almost nonexistent in the movie), and though I didn't like her at first, by act two, the actress really grew on me. Lots of funny moments, and different enough from the movie that you shouldn't skip it.
I also saw Wicked -- definitely a girlier show, and slightly more adult than Newsies (contains some adultery, and some twisted relationships, a darker tone, but nothing graphic). Great humor, lots of wordplay. More chick-flicky as it's really about two girls' friendship.
The Lion King is very artistic and stylized -- incredible sets, puppetry and costume design. A real visual feast, and the atmosphere is more African than the movie, though they've got also hip-hop, tangos and big Broadway numbers in there together with the original songs.
I haven't seen Annie or Mary Poppins, but my sister did and liked them both.

Thank you so much bigsis! I am leaning toward Newsies. I have a friend who saw it recently and really enjoyed. I was just looking for a larger sampling.

I loved Mama Mia.
I wasn't impressed with Mary Poppins.

Still SO hard to get tickets!
Newsies was really cute and upbeat. Once is more of a love story, but kind of sad. Pretty music though.

I think that we are going to end up with the Newsies. My friend recommended that DH see the film version FIRST to get the full picture because apparently there isn't really a set, just scaffolding or something.

The scenes change seamlessly by having more "suggestions" of sets, that with lighting, props and context tell you where you are. It's not confusing at all, and makes the show really dynamic.
Not high quality recording, but AWESOME.
So that scaffolding thing will be upstage, downstage, off stage, spinning around itself, missing the bottom pieces so it's just a "bridge", etc.

Newsies was AMAZING! but then again, we did the play in high school so I knew almost all the songs. Def the most "kosher" Broadway show, very minimal kissing.

No one saw Jersey Boys?
I thought that was the best!
Never a dull moment. I finally understood why it's so popular.
