it's a fire hazard wherever you light - if you're not careful ... |
While that's true, hopefully your roof is a little higher and a little less flammable then your schach.

Oh, and I light inside. Besides the fire hazard reason our sukkah is small and B"H we have several kids running around in it.

Sukka. You are supposed to light where you eat. I don't take my candelabra outside. I use tea lights in glass holders, which means a very low flame = less dangerous.

I light in the house because we can see the lights from the succah.
In my previous apt. our succah was on the roof, so I lit tea lights in glasses at the entrance to the roof. We could see the lights from the succah, but they were indoors so they didn't blow out.

Sukkah. (I didn't always. In our previous house and previous sukkah, I lit by the living room window, and you could see it from the sukkah.
In our new house, and new sukkah, the sukkah is big enough that I am not too worried. We are having a meal there, so I light in the sukkah.
I do use tea lights, with flat tea light holders. They won't be knocked down or fall anywhere. I wouldn't feel comfortable using my regular canldesticks. Anyway, we are usually at the table during the time they are lit, and they burn out by themselves during the meal, so it's not like we are leaving them.
