3x-8=100
If x = 36 then the other two buses each carry 32 passengers

X is the first bus, so (x-4) are each of the other two buses because they have four less passengers than Bus X.
Add all three buses together X+(X-4)+(X-4)=100
Now combine the Xs to get 3x and combine the two -4s to get -8 so it's
3x-8=100
Now add eight to both sides so it cancels out on the left and adds to the right to become
3x=108
Now divide by 3 on both sides to get X isolated so it becomes
x=36
Now since Bus X is 36 and the other two have four less, then they each have 32 passengers. Check by adding 36+32+32=100.
