I love when there are cookies that say the Chosson and Kallahs names on them.

I like a fancy set up, and the "better food", not just pretzels and chips and bought looking cookies.

Give the men and the women each the same stuff, not potato salad and herring for them, and cake for the women.

I agree CM - men and women should get same - whether its the food or the l'chaim its always nicer that way - and RivkaBatya - nicer is alway more memorable.

Most important - make sure you serve GOOD LIQUOR!!!!!

(And lots of it)!

Honestly, don't drive yourself crazy. People are coming to toast the new couple and wish them mazal tov - they're not coming for entertainment or to be fed. I had a few engagement parties - all very simple, but they were special b/c of the people that attended.

Nicer doesn't have to mean harder. It's like white paper plates or pretty pattern - or boxed cookies vs. bought cake that says mazel tov. Water vs. Champaign - etc... in other words presentation

Flowers make it fancier.
Also, whatever you serve, do it in your cystal serving pieces, or your best china. If you get several bulk candies they can be put into a fancy divided relish plate

Heaps of fresh cut vegetables (like tri color peppers) look lush as do vibrant colored fresh fruit, cut in pieces to be ready to eat. Arrange them by color for best presentation. Put flowers or petals in a bowl of water, freeze and remove bowl, arrange fruit around it. (watch out as it melts, though)

Cakes put on different levels (boxes under the cloth) looks elegant
Candles (in a safe way) do too

If you have several types of cake (not like a layer that stands in its own), cut them into squares and arrange them in papers on a pretty platter-don't leave them in the loaf pan, for example.

Put lacy fabric over the cloths

Mazel Tov!
