I have developed an asthma-type condition which makes frequent stairclimbing difficult for me. Being that I have a house full of young children BH, tending to their needs involves laundry, toys, diapers etc often brought from one floor to another.
Maybe it hasn't yet been invented, but is there a cheap dumbwaiter-like device that I can buy and install to make it easier to transport objects (not children!!) up & down the stairs?

why not set up a clothes line? put one pulley at the top of the stairs and one at the bottom. attach a basket.

Also it just occurred to me - would this be safe with children around?

I think my idea would be ok if you hung the pulleys at your height, not the kids'.

I'd get two of something like this:

http://www.amazon.com/Ball-Bea.....ulley

and buy a clothesline and basket to go with it.

We have baskets at the top and bottom of the stairs, collecting things for the next trip up or down, so more trips than necessary aren't made and things aren't forgotten.

Thanks everyone, I'm going to look into these suggestions.
Along the same lines, I have a steep 7-foot staircase to get to my front door. I have an infant and a 1-year-old in a side-by-side umbrella stroller, and heaving the stroller to my front door makes me breathless for the next half hour. Is there such a thing as a cheap ramp for such purposes?
