Has anyone ever added a second story to a house? What is the minimum it would cost( we are talking about a house that is 1200 sf adding an additional 1200 sf

I have no idea. HOWEVER, from our experience of using contractors in our home - prepare yourselves for the job to take longer and be more expensive than whatever they tell you!

It depends where you are.
It also depends on the scope of your work.
How many bathrooms will you be putting in the upstairs? If you're putting in a staircase, you will have to rearrange the downstairs as well. Will you be putting in a new kitchen "while you're at it"?
Will your foundation support a second story, or will you need to add new support?
Can you do the project with permits, or will you need a variance?

We were told in Lakewood 150,000 and up. Of course it depends on a lot of things.

You must have proper supports put in. We redid our attic by changing the roof and adding dormers and there are cracks in our second floor now because of the added weight.
